Underage migrants in the open without access to water and food

During regular visits to open locations in Šid, Asylum Protection Center discusses, advises and informs unaccompanied minors on a daily basis, often exhausted from being outside and being exposed to violence by Croatian border police.

Over the past two weeks, we met at least 35 boys from Afghanistan, aged 14 to 17 years. These boys, very exhausted, in muddy clothes and shoes, some of them and barefoot, explained that they have been in Serbia for a month and almost every day try to cross the border with Croatia, usually walking around for 10 hours, in order to get to countries of the European Union.

They are currently living and sleeping in an abandoned factory building, and are very worried because, in addition to lack of financial resources, they do not have access to drinking water and food, while sleeping in the open, some of them without blankets or sleeping bags. As they state, the last time they had access to water and food was 10 days ago, which were delivered by groups of international volunteers, while in the meantime they manage in any way they know how, and their approach depends on the good will and kind welcoming attitudes of local citizens. Ekman, 17, from Afghanistan, says that sometimes welcoming locals from the nearby facility give them water to drink, but they have been limited to three bottles a day, which, as he says, is not enough, since at least 50 to 100 are currently in the location, so they in turn have to drink water in smaller and insufficient quantities, in order to have enough to survive.

Our team informed the competent Center for Social Work about these unaccompanied minors, but the application to the competent institution remains unresponsive.
