Almost 14 000 citizens of Serbia were seeking asylum in an EU country during 2011, according to the report on migration and asylum seekers, which was unveiled yesterday by Commissioner for internal affairs, Cecilia Malmsterm.

Twice as many asylum seekers came from Afghanistan, who took first place as country of origin asulym seekers, followed by Russia (18 200), Pakistan (15 700) and Iraq.
According to the report of EU statistical office – Eurostat, in the EU states resides approximately 20 million citizens from third countries, or about 4 percent of the total population.
There are demands of the several countries to reintroduce border controls within the Schengen zone because of increased influx of foreigners. However, the report shows that the overwhelming majority of Europeans (67 percent) wouldn't accept such a measure, while 42 percent believe that we should help foreigners to come to the EU in order to fix the bad demographic trends.
