By the end of September and at the beginning of October 2009, the UNHCR, Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia, and Asylum Protection Center representatives paid visit to the Regional Center in Vrsac, the Vatin border crossing, as well as the Kikinda Police Directorate headquarters. During the visit issues such as the number of asylum seekers in the RS, their treatment, general boarder crossing safety and security, and migration policy in the RS were discussed. Also, several meetings were held with the magistrates in Vrsac and Kikinda, who informed the attendees about enforcement of the law in practice and treatment of the asylum seekers in the Republic of Serbia. Joint stands were taken on the actions and clearing the expositions of complex legal issues concerning asylum law in the RS.
In the period October 21-23, 2009, representatives of the Asylum Protection Center, Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia and of the UNHCR visited also the Horgos border crossing, magistrate courts in Subotica, Kanjiza, and Sombor, with the aim of finding out the exact number of asylum seekers in the RS, and how they are treated. During the visit, current practice of the law enforcement entities, the judiciary and the police, concerning asylum matters and the problems the officers are faced with while performing their duties were discussed.
