image001.jpg A meeting with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Thomas Hammarberg, who made an official assessment visit to Serbia on the same day to prepare a report on human rights protection in Serbia for the year 2008, was held in Belgrade on October 13, 2008.
On this occasion, Asylum Protection Center (APC) representatives talking with Mr. Hammarberg expressed their opinions about the situation in the field of asylum in Serbia, progress made since April, 1, 2008 (the Law on Asylum entered into force), process of development and consolidation of asylum institutions, number of asylum seekers, and other statistical data for the period April-October. APC representatives gave their own assessment of the situation and revealed the course of their future activities concerning development and improvement of the institution of asylum in Serbia, repeating once again what has already been stated in the APC Report on the state of human rights in the field of asylum in Serbia in 2008 submitted to the Council of Europe – that there is an upward trend in development and improvement of the asylum situation in Serbia.
Representatives of several local humanitarian organizations, who made their observations connected with their activities, were also present at the meeting.
